The agrifood software company plans to add 20 software developer staff in the next year, doubling its numbers. It recently won a valuable contract with Namibian firm MeatCo.

In the aftermath of the horse meat scandal and with growing food safety concerns worldwide, the time is ripe for fast growth.

Emydex is in the hot agritech space, providing software that gives critical food traceability in the industry for food processing companies like Dawn Meats and Moy Park, helping them track producing, costs and origin of product.

Irish tech firm strikes Namibian deal

Dublin-based agri-food tech firm Emydex Technology has signed a deal with the Meat Corporation (MeatCo) of Namibia, in Africa, to provide it with software systems.

The Irish firm develops and exports factory floor data capture, production reporting and traceability software systems to leading meat and processing firms across the globe.

The new two-year contract, worth €300,000, will involve six different MeatCo sites and has helped drive increases in Emydex’s workforce, which is expected to almost double from its current 22 employees. Twenty additional staff will be recruited over the next 18 months thanks to the new deal.

David McMahon, chief executive, Emydex Technology, explained the company was benefiting from export-led growth in the agri-food sector.

“Thanks to the solid growth in Irish food exports, there is a corresponding growth in demand for more sophisticated and robust software systems for production management, reporting and traceability.

“Responding to this growing demand, we will be doubling our workforce over the next 18 months, recruiting 20 highly skilled software programmers to work in our three main operating divisions in Dublin. Alongside the country’s reputation for high-quality food processing, Ireland is also becoming better-known for its food processing software capabilities.”

MeatCo is a meat processing and marketing organisation that works on behalf of Namibian farmers.

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D., has welcomed the announcement by Irish-owned Emydex Technology that it is to create 20 full-time software jobs in Dublin over the next eighteen months, doubling its workforce.

The Agri-food software company, which already employs 22 staff, has also announced a major deal with the Meat Corporation of Namibia in Africa (‘MeatCo’). The meat processing and marketing organisation works on behalf of Namibian farmers and the two-year €300,000 contract will involve six separate MeatCo sites in the Sub-Saharan country.

The software company, which is celebrating its 10 year anniversary in 2014, was set-up with the support of the Fingal Local Enterprise Office and the company’s development continues to be supported by the Department of Jobs through Enterprise Ireland here and overseas.

It develops and exports factory floor Data Capture, Production Reporting and Traceability software systems to leading meat and food processing companies around the world. Working in Ireland, the UK, France and now Africa, the company’s impressive client list includes Kepak, Dawn Meats, Dunbia, Moy Park and the Kerry Group.

Welcoming the jobs news in Dublin today, Minister Richard Bruton T.D. said: “ICT is a sector which we have specifically targeted as part of our Action Plan for Jobs, and in recent years we have seen significant growth in this area. Today’s announcement that Emydex, an Irish-owned company which has grown with the support of the Fingal Local Enterprise Office and Enterprise Ireland, is expanding further and creating 20 additional jobs is a great boost. I congratulate them on this project and wish them every success for the future”.

According to The CEO of Emydex Technology, David McMahon, the company is benefitting from export-led growth in the Agri-food sector. Originally founded in 2004 by Redmond Burke, now a Non-Executive Director, and James Grennan, Emydex Technology’s Product Director, the company received feasibility and employment grants from the Fingal Local Enterprise Office and more recently, continues to be supported by Enterprise Ireland.

Recruitment is already underway for the software programming positions, which will be based at Emydex Technology’s Blanchardstown headquarters in Northwest Business Park. Of the new specialist roles announced today, ten will be hired immediately, with the remaining ten to be recruited over the next eighteen months.

Emydex sign many of Ireland’s Largest Fish Processors

Exhibiting at the Teagasc Meat@Gateways event being held in Ashtown, Emydex today announce they have signed up several new Fish processing customers in as many months.

Working in conjunction with BIM’s eLocate scheme, designed to encourage seafood enterprises to implement common standards of traceability, labelling and weighing through the implementation of Traceability software systems such as Emydex.

Emydex has so far signed up some of the largest processors in Ireland including Castletownbere Fisherman’s co-op, Glenmar Shellfish,  Goodfish and Eiranova, all located in Co. Cork, the Clogherhead Fisherman’s co-op in Louth, Galway & Aran Fishermans co-operative, Nolans Seafood and Rockabill in Co.Dublin.

Roll-out is well underway in most projects, with the Emydex Production Management System now operational in many seafood processing factories. The Emydex Fish factory system was designed in close collaboration with the GS1 Ireland and BIM, the latter whose aim is to implement barcode labelling and traceability standards across the seafood processing Industries in Ireland, as well as Europe. In addition, Emydex’s labelling at sea system is currently being trialed a number of Trawlers operating in the Irish Sea.

Emydex’s Fish Processing software system is designed to handle all types of seafood processing whether white fish or shellfish, fresh or frozen, and can manage the entire seafood processing supply chain from boats labelling product at sea, to boat landings, 3rd party intake, re-grading, production and processing such as filleting, smoking, labelling, warehousing and dispatch. The system also provides for real-time yield analysis and KPI reporting

The software system can integrate to 3rd party cold stores, financial systems as well as a large range of factory floor hardware devices such as indicator/scales, PC terminals and hand-held scanning devices used for sales order picking and dispatch as well as stock management.

Appointment of Australasian Distributor

Emydex are pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Carson and his team as the Emydex partner distributor for the region. Based in Brisbane Australia, Ian previously worked with Emydex on a number of customer implementations in both Ireland and Southern Africa where he became familiar with the underlying structure and workings of the data capture and production reporting platform.

Ian believes the Emydex solution has great potential for the Australian and New Zealand markets. Being a mature yet modern, highly flexible solution, already proven in many large multinational meat processing companies, Emydex is ideally suited to food & meat processors both large and small. With over 25 years in the meat processing industry in both Australasia and overseas, not only as an ‘end user’ but also as a systems provider, Ian has a deep understanding of both business processes and importantly,how technology can add value to these.

Having worked with many systems in the past,Ian quickly noted a particular strength of the Emydex system is its ability to offer a ‘business logic’ layer which allows Emydex to tailor the software platform to meet customer-specific needs, and yet still keep the core base system intact allowing for upgrades as they become available. This allows companies to maintain the competitive advantage they derive from their unique business processes, yet still take advantage of the new features included in future software upgrades, something most other systems do not allow.

In addition to traditional ‘on-premise’ installations, the Emydex system can also be offered as a service (SaaS), hosted as a cloud based system with flexible licensing models allowing for reductions in the capital costs of upgrading systems, as well as keeping ongoing costs of ownership to reasonable levels. Cloud based deployment can also assist larger multi-site companies to manage their own Emydex software environment centrally, thereby reducing administration costs.

Emydex live in MeatCo, Namibia

WINDHOEK – NAMIBIA:
Emydex today announce that their factory floor Data Capture, Production Reporting and Traceability system is now live and operational in MeatCo (Namibia)’s main beef processing plant in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.

The beef primal deboning system in Windhoek is the first of an eight phase project that will see Emydex systems rolled out across MeatCo’s six beef processing operations in four separate locations in Namibia, as well as integrating Emydex to the Table Bay Cold Store in South Africa.

The two year, Euro 300k contract includes system rollout to Meatco’s two export approved slaughter and boning plants in Windhoek and Okahandja. Both plants are capable of slaughtering up to 1500cattle per day. The naturally grass fed Beef for which Namibia is famous is supplemented with Beef from Meatco’s own feed lot at Okapuka.

The Meat Corporation of Namibia (‘MeatCo’) also operate two further non-export abattoirs owned by the Namibian government but managed by Meatco, in Katima and Oshakati, which will both see Emydex installed. Finally a Wholesale beef processing plant and a cannery (both on the Windhoek site) will operate Emydex’s production management system.

Having pre-configured MeatCo’s customer specific business requirements in Dublin during February, Emydex staff were onsite in Windhoek during the Months of March and April, further configuring and customising the Emydex system to comply with the local market requirements of Meatco’s main export plant.

Phase one of the Windhoek project covered the carcass chills, carcass dispatch, boning hall, primal and carton packing, finished product stock, carton dispatch and integration to Meatco’s Sage X3 ERP system. Emydex are currently working on the Meatco Wholesale plant in Windhoek, soon to be followed by the Cannery and finally the Windhoek Beef slaughter line.

The company are targeting September 2014 as a likely roll out date for Windhoek system into Meatco’s second export plant in Okahandja.Due to the inherent flexibility and usability of the Emydex system Meatco are planning to roll out the Emydex system in the Oshakati and Katima abattoirs themselves,with remote support from Emydex as needed.

Commenting on the first phase of the Emydex system roll-out, AndriesTaljaardt,Meatco’s Windhoek Plant Manager said

“While slaughter continues uninterrupted, system upgrades are currently being effected at our Windhoek abattoir to improve the effectiveness of operations and maximise output in order to cater to growing customer demands.

Because of these demands, and the fact that preferences and specifications are continuously changing, we have to move into the direction which the market is moving. We have installed a new Production Management Software System (Emdyex) and layout in our Windhoek abattoir deboning department, which allows for a lot of value addition to our products. The Emydex system controls the volumes and all the information on the deboning floor and is responsible for the production recons and the labelling of products.

With the new layout, we have introduced an additional vacuum line and an additional frozen line. With that, we can now put up to 420 carcasses through deboning per day within normal working hours. For May, we are looking to put more than 6600 carcasses through deboning. Round about June, once the system is fully implemented, the number of carcasses we want to put through deboning is about 7000.”

In addition Andries said “We chose Emydex given it is a highly technological system that is used in many international abattoirs that adhere to European Union standards. Meatco is a pioneer in quality standards compliance in Namibia and is one of the first companies to achieve certification for international standards like ISO 9001 and HACCP.”

Commenting on the Emydex system roll-out, Nico Weck, Group Chief Financial Officer at the MeatCo group said “since implementing Emydex’s shop floor barcode labelling and scanning system at our Windhoek primal deboning operations, our managers now have instant access to accurate reporting on our Yields, Stocks and Traceability”.
